Kolama (කෝලම)
Masks speak and stories dance
This artwork is inspired by Kolam, a traditional Sri Lankan folk performance where masked characters come alive to tell stories, entertain, and often deliver social satire.
Each mask tells its own story — from kings and queens to villagers, demons, and jesters — weaving comedy, drama, and morality tales. Performed in open village settings, Kolam blends dance, storytelling, and caricature to mirror everyday life and social roles. In this playful take, checkerboard and card motifs bring in elements of fun to harmonize with the positivie energy of Kolam echoing the spirit of village games alongside this rich tradition.
Kolama isn’t just theatre—it’s a vibrant, joyful celebration of Sri Lankan culture, where masks speak, stories dance, and playfulness comes alive..
